I am most grateful to the Archdeacon for giving Synod this opportunity for debate. I want to concentrate on the question of homosexual practice, fully realising that the Motion goes much wider than this. But it is an important issue, which raises deeper questions about how we do our theology and how we live with differences of opinion.

It is a great pleasure and privilege for me to welcome you, together with Cardinal Vik, to this Second European Ecumenical Assembly and to thank all who have made this Assembly possible - in the Council of Catholic Bishops' Conferences for Europe, in the conference of European Churches, in the member churches and Bishops' conferences, in associated organisations, in movements and religious orders and especially our hosts here in Graz, in Styria and in Austria.

I am overjoyed to be able to send you greetings at this momentous time in the continuing story of God's church in Rwanda. I give thanks to God that through all the pain, suffering, and darkness which you have all been through, this new chapter in your common life is now opening. This indeed is a clear sign that God is blessing his people even in the midst of the darkness

Shortly after our commissioning as Pilgrims in Rome's St Gregorio's Church (that is where, tradition says, Gregory the Great 1400 years before sent forth Augustine and his 40 monks), we had our first ride in the bus that soon would be our travelling companion through most of our journey to Canterbury. It was a short ride into the heart of the city. We were then led, on foot, luggage in hand, to the fellowship centre of the St Egidio community, a Roman Catholic lay organisation of people from all walks of life who share a common vision of reconciliation, a vision they make real through concrete efforts in the city and around the world.

On Monday 19 May the Archbishop of Canterbury and Mrs Carey attended the Chelsea Flower Show to launch a new rose variety to commemorate the 1400th Anniversary of the arrival of St Augustine in 1997, and herald the 1998 Lambeth Conference. The Cathedral was represented by the Dean and Mrs Simpson and ten choirboys, who performed two specially prepared 'Rose' anthems at the ceremony.
