As you know, I have been here in Sarajevo so far for just two full days, and it has been quite unlike any other visit I have ever made! It has been a privilege to be here at such an historic turning-point, and to be with the brave people of Sarajevo, of all faiths and none.

The Revd Canon John L. Peterson, Secretary General of Anglican Communion, today welcomed His All-Holiness Bartholomaios I, Archbishop of Constantinople, New Rome, and Ecumenical Patriarch, to the Anglican Communion offices in London.

It is expected that the Archbishop of Canterbury will visit the city of Sarajevo in Bosnia-Herzegovina between 15 - 18 December 1995. In this short visit he hopes to meet leaders from both the Muslim and Christian communities, political leaders, those engaged in humanitarian work and military personnel.

The whole issue of refugees, displaced people and the homeless has been on my mind and my heart over the past year. Eileen and I have experienced in many different ways something of the trauma which so many people in this world today are suffering.
