Many of you will recall that some eighteen months ago a number of British soldiers got seriously lost in the mountainous jungle of Mount Kinabalu in Sabah. The investigation into that incident did not reflect well on the soldiers involved, and there were several who might have been grateful for the Word of the Lord quoted in Isaiah "And your ears shall hear a word behind you saying: `This is the way, walk in it' when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left".

I have always found the Christmas story to be unfailingly topical. Whether one thinks of the problems facing refugees, or the homeless, or the wider issues of the search for hope and meaning, there is something in the message of Christmas that speaks to them all.

It is expected that the Archbishop of Canterbury will visit the city of Sarajevo in Bosnia-Herzegovina between 15 - 18 December 1995. In this short visit he hopes to meet leaders from both the Muslim and Christian communities, political leaders, those engaged in humanitarian work and military personnel.
