This statement on the events of May 25 1997 by the Anglican Church of Freetown has been received via the Church Mission Society (CMS) in London. It is dated 15 June and reproduced here in full. Torn by the remnants of civil war between rival rebel groups, Liberia remains an unstable and dangerous country, but the return of Bishop Edward Neufville, the Anglican diocesan bishop in January marked a significant step toward reestablishing normal life for the country's Anglican churches.

West Africa: AID Agencies Cut Back Operations

Twelve international non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including the Lutheran World Federation (LWF), decided to cut back drastically their relief operations in Liberia until security and order are established, the LWF said in a press release. The decision was taken "reluctantly" by officials from the NGOs at a 28 May meeting in Geneva.

West Africa: New Bishop of Liberia Consecrated

The death of Archbishop George Browne in February, 1993, left the Episcopal Church of Liberia mired in efforts to reorganise and rebuild in the middle of a war. In a shining example of Christian hope, a special convocation last May elected Suffragan Bishop Edward Neufville II to succeed Archbishop Browne.
