Leaders from the churches and chapels in the Welsh town of Port Talbot have formed an ecumenical ministry team to support thousands of local workers who could lose their jobs following the announcement that the Indian steel company Tata, which owns the majority of the UK’s steel works, is looking to divest from its operations in the country.

The Church in Wales has joined with other Christian denominations in the country as well as expert and survivor organisations in a new forum to safeguard children and vulnerable adults and to ensure that all churches in Wales are safe places for them.

Churches across Wales are being urged to switch off all lights or hold candlelit vigils to mark Earth Hour at 8.30 pm on Saturday 19 March. In doing so, they will join in with people across the world in what has been described as “a symbolic act to shine a light on climate change and the need to protect our environment.”

Over recent years, churches in the UK have increasingly hosted husting events ahead of local and general elections; but the churches of Wales have now gone one step further, and produced a set of videos in which party representatives are interviewed by church representatives.

A new law approved last week by the devolved legislature in Wales to protect the nation’s historic built heritage has been welcomed by the Church in Wales. The Historic Environment (Wales) Act will become law next month when it receives Royal Assent.

The Church in Wales has appointed the diocesan secretary from Coventry, in the Church of England, as its new provincial secretary. Simon Lloyd will take up his new role in May following the retirement of Wales’ current Provincial Secretary, John Shirley.

A special commemoration service was held in Cardiff yesterday (Sunday) to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the near-destruction of the city’s Anglican cathedral during a night of war time bombing that resulted in the deaths of 165 people.

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, set up by the British government to examine “whether public bodies and other non-state institutions have taken seriously their duty of care to protect children from sexual abuse in England and Wales”, will investigate the Anglican Church as one of its first 12 investigations.
