Rescues continue as Canadian wildfire grows

Canadian officials are using military and civilian planes to rescue 8,000 people trapped by the growing wildfire in the Fort McMurray area. The town’s 88,000 population were evacuated this week but the dramatic spread of the fire means that some of those who have already moved are now in fresh danger.

Anglicans respond to Canadian town's wildfire evacuation

The Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, Archbishop Fred Hiltz, has asked for “the prayers of the whole church” in response to a major wildfire in Alberta that has resulted in the town of Fort McMurray and neighbouring communities being subjected to an enforced evacuation as firefighters predict that much of the town will be destroyed.

The former Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Revd James Jones, will provide a report to the British government detailing the experiences of the families of those killed in the Hillsborough disaster, the UK’s Home Secretary told MPs this afternoon.

Bishop of Liverpool: Hillsborough is a story of "loss grief and pain"

The Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Revd Paul Bayes, has spoken of the “loss, grief and pain” felt by the victims of the Hillsborough disaster as a jury ruled that the 96 Liverpool FC fans who were killed in a crush at the FA Cup semi-final match against Nottingham Forest in April 1989 were unlawfully killed.

Prayers and action following Ecuador earthquake

The presiding bishop of the US-based Episcopal Church has called for prayer for the people of Ecuador following last weekend’s devastating earthquake which has so far claimed the lives of 570 people. A further 155 remain missing; and 7,015 others are known to be injured. Almost 25,000 people are currently living in emergency shelters.

The Missions Board of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand & Polynesia (AMB) and the Diocese of Polynesia are formulating the next stages of their response to the destruction wreaked by Cyclone Winston on Fiji and Tonga. Archbishop Winston Halapua spent two days last week visiting some of the most remote Anglican communities on Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu.

Swaziland declares national emergency as drought intensifies

The government of Swaziland has declared a national emergency as the southern African nation continues to suffer the effects of a devastating drought. The Prime Minister said that the draught, which began in 2014 has “deepened in severity, with a path that has defied regional weather forecasting” and has had “devastating consequences.”

The chief executive of the Anglican Missions Board (AMB) – the relief and development agency of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia – has called on international Anglicans to assist with prayers and funds as it responds to the recent cyclone that caused devastation in Fiji and its surrounding islands.

Cyclone Winston: Church responds to widespread damage in Fiji

The largest storm ever recorded in the region struck the islands of Fiji over the weekend, after causing widespread damage in Tonga. The Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia is already working to assess the damage and begin its response.
