Tackling poverty and conflict through microfinance

A partnership between the Anglican Church of Burundi and Unicef is helping to tackle poverty and strengthen peace by financing small-scale cross-community agricultural projects. It comes at a time that the UN warns that the country has been plunged into “civil unrest, growing insecurity, indiscriminate violence and sharp economic deterioration.”

Galatians 6:2 conference explores "bearing one another's burdens"

Twenty-three people representing six provinces – Burundi, West Africa, Central Africa, Southern Africa, Tanzania and the (American) Episcopal Church – have come together for the Galatians 6:2 Conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to create “the space where trust is developed” and build companionship despite differences in the Communion.

Episcopal Church's "season of prayer" for Anglicans facing violence and civil strife.

The Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, Michael Curry, has called on his members to hold a season of prayer for regions of the Anglican Communion which are experiencing violence and civil strife. “In this season of Resurrection, I call on everyone to pray for our brothers and sisters in areas where there is much burden and little hope,” Bishop Curry said.

Call to Prayer for Burundi

A Communion-wide call to pray for the crisis-torn country of Burundi and the role that the Anglican Church of Burundi plays in in bringing peace and reconciliation has been issued. The call to pray – from Holy Week and through the Easter season – is being backed by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.

Archbishop of Canterbury visits refugee camp in Rwanda

The Archbishop of Canterbury visited a refugee camp in Rwanda on Sunday, after a three-day visit to Burundi to show solidarity with Anglicans and pray for peace and reconciliation. Archbishop Justin Welby toured the Mahama Camp in the Kibungo Diocese of Rwanda, where almost 50,000 refugees – all from Burundi – have fled.

Archbishop Justin Welby and WCC visit Burundi

The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby is visiting Burundi to show solidarity with local Anglicans and to pray for peace and reconciliation. His visit comes hot on the heels of a solidarity visit by a delegation from the WCC, including Dr Agnes Abuom, the moderator of the WCC Central Committee and a member of the Anglican Church of Kenya.

Vigils held for Burundi as African Union warns of genocide

Coventry Cathedral will take part in a vigil for Burundi tomorrow (Friday) as the African Union warn of an impending genocide in the east African country. And staff at the Anglican Communion Office in London will pause to pray for peace for the troubled country.

One killed and two injured in gun attack on church

A young boy has been killed and two people injured after an armed gang attacked a church in the Burundian capital Bujumbura. No motive for the attack on St Mark’s Church, Ngagara, is known; but it is believed to be part of ongoing violence that has left more than 240 people dead since President Pierre Nkurunziza announced in April that he would seek re-election for an unprecedented third term. President Nkurunziza won July’s election and survived an attempted coup.
