The first World Humanitarian Summit was a “turning point” in the way the world works to alleviate the suffering of millions, the UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon said as the summit came to an end. Members of the Anglican Communion were amongst those present for the summit in Instanbul, Turkey.

There needs to be a greater involvement of local and national organisations in policy and decision making process if the world’s humanitarian response is to move from “delivering aid” to “ending need” – that was the message of ACT Alliance general secretary John Nduna to the World Humanitarian Summit today in Istanbul, Turkey.

The Archbishop of Canterbury has given his strong support to the work of community-based responses to the global Aids epidemic ahead of next month’s UN High Level Meeting on Ending Aids in New York; calling for a “great further step” towards eradicating the disease as a global health threat by 2030.

A UN plan to eradicate Aids as a public health threat by 2030 has been welcomed by the Anglican mission agency United Society; but UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon warns that instead of eradication, the Aids epidemic could be prolonged indefinitely if urgent action is not implemented within the next five years.

About 23 years ago, says Archbishop David Moxon, formerly of the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia, he and the local Roman Catholic bishop made an agreement that still makes him feel hopeful. The two church heads decided to share the rite of imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday – a tradition that continues in New Zealand today.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, is seeking an adviser for Anglican Communion affairs, to work from Lambeth Palace, his London home and office. The successful applicant, who will be a priest or bishop in the Anglican Communion, will “serve and support the Archbishop in all matters relating to his Anglican Communion responsibilities.”

A task group has been appointed to “maintain conversation” among the Primates of the Anglican Communion as requested by the Primates during their meeting in January. The Primates asked the Archbishop of Canterbury to establish the group as part of their commitment to “walk together” despite “deep differences”.

The secretary general of the Anglican Communion, Archbishop Josiah Idowu-Fearon, has rejected criticism from six former members of the ACC’s standing committee of statements made during and after ACC-16 about Resolution 16.24 – “Walking Together” – which deals with the ACC's response to the Primates’ Meeting in January.
