By this stage of the holiday season, I imagine you might be looking with dismay at your overflowing rubbish bin, or the mountain of debris piling up outside your back door. Food, drink, presents – they all come with more and more packaging. Even the most eco-conscious of us is likely to have a bit of a bad conscience after Christmas.

Christmas is often a time when we have many expectations – of whanau being together again, lots of food, especially kai moana, carol services and a chance to rest and unwind. The reality is often different. For all too many households, Christmas can be a time of short tempers, road rage, family strife, hardship, stress, overspending and growing debt, drunkenness or violence.

“Now is the time to re-kindle the work of this Commission.” This statement from the Rt Revd Musonda T S Mwamba, Bishop of Botswana, set the tone for the first meeting of the All Africa Anglican – Lutheran Commission (AAALC) since 2001. The Commission met 12-14 December 2007, in Johannesburg, South Africa, with the Lutheran side serving as hosts.

The Inter-Anglican Standing Commission on Ecumenical Relations (IASCER) met in Cairo, Egypt, from Wednesday, 5th to Monday, 10th December 2007, under the chairmanship of the Most Revd Drexel Gomez, Primate of the Church in the Province of the West Indies. The Commission is charged with reviewing current international ecumenical dialogues involving Anglicans, and provincial and regional initiatives towards unity with other Christians.
