The Bishop of Armidale, the Right Rev Peter Brain, has been elected to the Appellate Tribunal of the Anglican Church of Australia. He was elected in a postal ballot of members of General Synod's House of Clergy, to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Bishop Bruce Wilson.

The Most Rev Harry Goodhew, Archbishop of Sydney, and the Most Rev Ian George, Archbishop of Adelaide, were each appointed an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AO) in the Australia Day (26th January) Honours List. This is the second highest honour in the Order of Australia awards.

NSW Churches unite for flood relief

As flood waters continue to cover much of rural NSW, Anglican churches throughout the state are coming together to help locals pick up the pieces in the wake of the disaster. Flooding has affected a substantial part of the state over the past week, causing tens of millions of dollars worth of damage to farmland, property and businesses, particularly in the country NSW dioceses of Armidale and Bathurst.

New Bishop of Temotu announced

The Archbishop of Melanesia, the Most Reverend Sir Ellison Pogo, has today announced the name of the person who will become the third Bishop of Temotu. Following a meeting of the Diocesan Electoral Board and confirmation by the Council of Bishops of the name put forward, the new Bishop will be the Reverend Canon David Vunagi, who is presently the Church's Mission Secretary.

On Sunday, 15 October, in Townsville, Australia, a Peace Agreement was signed by all parties to the conflict which has plagued Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands for almost two years. A month earlier, a Cease-fire Agreement had been signed and although there were several notable breaches of that agreement, it was followed by a concerted effort for a comprehensive peace treaty
