[Lambeth Palace] Archbishop Justin Welby said [yesterday] "our prayers around the world" are for an end to violence in South Sudan as the country marks four years of independence.

Archbishop Justin Welby said:

"As South Sudan celebrates the fourth anniversary of its hard-won independence, our prayers around the world are for an immediate end to senseless hostilities and for peace to take root. So many civilian men, women and children have suffered, and so many been displaced both internally and externally. This must end. I pray and strongly call for both sides to recognise the need to sheath their swords, meet on middle ground and begin together to walk the path of reconciliation."
