A new map of the National Cycle Network in Wales has been produced, identifying how 49 of Wales’ most historic sites can be accessed on bike – as cycling increase in popularity for a family day out at the weekend or during the school holidays.

The Sacred Trails map, produced by charity Sustrans with the Church in Wales and Cadw, the Welsh Government’s historic environment service, provides four great rides linking some of Wales’ most scenic sections of the National Cycle Network with some of the nations’ most historic and sacred sites.

Promoting 49 sacred sites in Wales, the map allows people to plot a short day trip to take in multiple sites, or combine a more challenging multi-day ride with some Welsh history; meaning that Wales’ rich cultural heritage and religious routes will be made available to all the family, alongside promoting some of the excellent National Cycle Network routes and Welsh countryside and coastline.

The leaflet maps out prominent sacred places along the National Cycle Network in Wales, including cathedrals, churches, chapels, shrines and holy wells, as well as prehistoric burial chambers and ancient carved crosses. There are also castles and monuments, each with their own story to tell and unique sense of peace and spirituality.

Bishop Wyn Evans, the Bishop of St Davids, said, “We are blessed in Wales with an incredible legacy of spiritual places, including fabulous cathedrals, which are free to visit. This trail gives visitors a full and unique picture of Wales, its heritage and culture and deep sense of spirituality. It also offers a real challenge for the intrepid to complete the whole route and perhaps raise money for good causes. We are delighted to have worked with Cadw and Sustrans on the project and to promote with them the opportunities Wales has to offer.”

John Griffiths, Minister for Culture and Sport, “By providing specific cycling trails we’re encouraging people to not only exercise and keep fit this summer, but to also visit some of the spectacular heritage sites Wales has to offer.

“By making physical and thematic links between places and sites we’re encouraging people to follow stories across Wales to learn more about their history, and combining this with a cycling trail to travel from one site to another improves the experience further. I encourage everyone – families, visitors and local communities – to take advantage of the new resources produced to explore Wales and learn about their history over the summer months.”

Jane Lorimer, National Director of Sustrans Cymru, said, “We hope this map will encourage more people from Wales and further afield to explore some of our great historical sites by bike.

“Cycle tourism brings money into the Welsh economy – and this initiative links two things that are great about Wales: our scenic cycle routes and our fabulous history.”

The map is free and will be available from Sustrans website and sacred locations across Wales.

The map will be launched at the Eisteddfod on Monday, Aug 4 at 2.45pm at the Sustrans stand (Stand 523-524)

Map newydd yn cysylltu llwybrau teithio wrth dreftadaeth gysegredig Cymru

Mae map newydd y Rhwydwaith Beicio Cenedlaethol yng Nghymru wedi ei gynhyrchu sy’n nodi sut y gellir cael mynediad at 49 o safleoedd mwyaf hanesyddol Cymru ar feic -  wrth i feicio gynyddu yn ei boblogrwydd fel gweithgaredd diwrnod allan i’r teulu  ar benwythnos neu yn ystod y gwyliau.

Mae’r map Llwybrau Cysegredig, a gynhyrchwyd gan elusen Sustrans ar y cyd â’r Eglwys yng Nghymru a Cadw, gwasanaeth amgylchedd hanesyddol Llywodraeth Cymru, yn cynnig pedair taith wych sy’n cysylltu rhai o adrannau prydferthaf y Rhwydwaith Beicio Cenedlaethol gyda rhai o safleoedd mwyaf hanesyddol a chysegredig y wlad.

Gan hyrwyddo 49 o safleoedd cysegredig yng Nghymru, mae’r map yn caniatáu i bobl drefnu taith fer un diwrnod i gyrraedd nifer o safleoedd, neu gyfuno taith fwy heriol dros fwy nag un diwrnod gydag ychydig o hanes Cymru; gan olygu y bydd llwybrau treftadaeth ddiwydiannol a chrefyddol cyfoethog Cymru ar gael i’r teulu cyfan, yn ogystal â hyrwyddo rhai o lwybrau rhagorol y Rhwydwaith Beicio Cenedlaethol a chefn gwlad ac arfordiroedd Cymru.

Mae’r daflen yn dangos safleoedd cysegredig pwysig ar hyd y Rhwydwaith Beicio Cenedlaethol yng Nghymru, yn cynnwys cadeirlannau, eglwysi, capeli, cysegrfannau a ffynhonnau  cysegredig, yn ogystal â siambrau claddu cynhanes a chroesau cerfiedig hynafol. Ceir hefyd gestyll a chofebion, pob un â’i hanes ei hun a’i deimlad unigryw o dawelwch ac ysbrydolrwydd.

Dywedodd yr Esgob Wyn EVANS, Esgob Tyddewi yr Eglwys yng Nghymru, “Rydym wedi ein bendithio ag etifeddiaeth anhygoel o fannau ysbrydol, yn cynnwys cadeirlannau gwych, y gellir mynd i mewn iddynt am ddim. Mae’r llwybr hwn yn rhoi darlun unigryw o Gymru, ei threftadaeth a’i diwylliant a theimlad dwys o ysbrydolrwydd i ymwelwyr. Mae hefyd yn cynnig gwir her ar gyfer y glew i gwblhau’r llwybr cyfan ac efallai codi arian ar gyfer achosion da. Mae’n bleser gennym fod wedi gweithio gyda Cadw a Sustrans ar y prosiect ac i hyrwyddo gyda hwy y cyfleoedd sydd gan Gymru i’w cynnig”

Dywedodd John Griffiths, Gweinidog dros Ddiwylliant a Chwaraeon,“Drwy ddarparu llwybrau beicio penodol rydym yn annog pobl nid yn unig i wneud ymarfer corff a chadw’n iach yr haf hwn, ond hefyd i ymweld â rhai o safleoedd treftadaeth trawiadol Cymru.

Drwy wneud cysylltiadau corfforol a thematig  rhwng lleoedd a safleoedd, rydym yn annog pobl i ddilyn storïau ledled Cymru er mwyn dysgu mwy am ei hanes, ac mae cyfuno hyn gyda llwybr beicio i deithio o un safle i’r llall yn gwella mwy fyth ar y profiad. Rwy’n annog pawb - teuluoedd, ymwelwyr a chymunedau lleol - i fanteisio ar yr adnoddau newydd a gynhyrchir i archwilio Cymru a dysgu am ei hanes dros fisoedd yr haf.”

Meddai Jane Lorimer, Cyfarwyddwr Cenedlaethol Sustrans Cymru, “Gobeithiwn y bydd y map hwn yn annog mwy o bobl o Gymru a’r tu hwnt i archwilio rhai o’n safleoedd hanesyddol gwych ar feic.

“Mae twristiaeth beicio yn dod ag arian i economi Cymru - ac mae’r fenter hon yn cysylltu dau beth sy’n wych am Gymru: ein teithiau beicio godidog a’n hanes ardderchog.”
