The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu has invited Headteachers from schools and academies across the North of England to Bishopthorpe Palace on Wednesday 24 April 2013 to hear about the Young Leaders Award, which has been developed by his Youth Trust.  The Archbishop will also address Headteachers on the importance of enabling community regeneration.

The Archbishop of York Youth Trust Young Leaders Award is offered at Key Stage 2, 3, 4 and Post 16.  There are currently 60 schools involved with 8000 students taking the Awards so far. The Award encourages schools to teach the importance of young people taking practical action to improve the areas in which they live.

The Archbishop said: “The Young Leaders Award encourages young people to be of service to others, within schools or communities and it’s all about making a difference in people’s lives. To be the change you want to see is a very encouraging message for us all.  The students are developing a greater openness towards other people and are taking on the responsibility for making things happen.

“We have seen young people running charity events; taking part in sponsored walks; runs; bike rides and swimming; working with asylum seekers and refugees; joining search and rescue parties; organising their friends to pick up litter in their community; caring for older people and mentoring younger students in school. It has been incredible!”

Annette Smith, Morecambe Bay Foodbank Coordinator said: “A Year 7 pupil at Ripley St Thomas School recently got in touch about his volunteering challenge.  He showed wonderful initiative to visit the Foodbank, to check which food stuffs we were short of, and to approach the local supermarket about his fundraising project.  His contribution contained five food parcels.  Each parcel contains three days’ worth of food, three meals a day as well as toiletries.  I hope other year 7 students are just as successful and many other people benefit from the work of their projects”

Robin Rolls, Director of the Youth Trust said: “The Archbishop is inviting Headteachers to Bishopthorpe to hear more about the Young Leaders Award, and we’ve been delighted with the response so far.  We held a similar event last year and it was a great success.  We’ve worked incredibly hard on the resources for the Award to make it fit with many key areas of the school curriculum and more importantly Ofsted’s criteria for the spiritual, moral, social and cultural dimension of school life”
