Plans to charge VAT on alterations to church buildings from October were a "kick in the teeth", the Anglican Bishop of Lancaster has said.
Alterations to listed buildings, many of which are churches, will be subject to 20% VAT instead of being zero-rated.
The Right Reverend Geoff Pearson said it would put added pressure on Lancashire churches already struggling with maintenance costs.
He said: "It makes the challenges we face even bigger."
