The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu has encouraged people to show their support for the men and women who serve in the Armed Forces. Armed Forces Day takes place on Saturday 25 June 2011.

The Archbishop’s statement follows:

“This Armed Forces Day I want to say a big ‘Thank You’ to all our armed services. I hope as many of you as possible take this opportunity to show your support for our brave servicemen and servicewomen all around the world as they put their lives at risk on a daily basis to protect our freedoms and the freedoms of many. They are all real heroes and we owe them a massive debt of gratitude for what they do.

It is important to let our service personnel know that we are all very proud of the contribution they are making for our country. Let us continue to keep them in our thoughts and prayers and hope everyone of them will return home safely. Play your part; get involved and show your support for all who serve on this Armed Forces Day!”

To mark Armed Forces Day, the Archbishop will also be releasing this message via Twitter and adding a ‘Twibbon’ to his Twitter account to show his support.
