Anglican Church throws weight behind environmental awareness

Anglican Archbishop Thabo Makgoba has announced the church's support for raising awareness of ecological dangers threatening the planet.

The Anglican Church, with the Southern African Faith Communities' Environment Institute, Invited the public to join in a celebration service for the "Season of Creation" as well as the launch of the Keiskamma Art Project's Creation Altar-piece Exhibition at St George's Cathedral last night.Makgoba, who was the keynote speaker, said the "Season of Creation" provided valuable resources to enable people to "grow in appreciation of the wonders of the world we inhabit"."My prayer is that this resource may enhance our worship and deepen our comprehension of God as Creator In this way I hope that we will be encouraged to work to overcome the threats to our planet that come through humanselfishness."The institute's Geoffrey Davies said he hoped that through this initiative people would be made aware of their role as "custodians of the planet".The institute is a non-profit organisation to assist and encourage faith communities by informing them about environmental and ecological issues.The exhibition and a collection of documentary' photographs of Hamburg can be seen at St George's Cathedral daily from today to October 4 between 10am to 4pm.
