Three Christian maritime societies have signed an agreement to work more closely together for the benefit of seafarers.

They are the Apostleship of the Sea (Roman Catholic) the British & International Sailors' Society (interdenominational) and The Mission to Seafarers (Anglican). The Christian Ecumenical Covenant for Maritime Ministry in the UK and Eire was signed by officials of the three societies during the 187th anniversary service and meeting of the BISS.

The Covenant was signed by Monsignor John Armitage, a Trustee of the Apostleship of the Sea (Great Britain), the Revd David Potterton, Principal Chaplain of the British & International Sailors' Society, and the Revd Canon Bill Christianson, Secretary General of The Mission to Seafarers.

The covenant commits the societies to foster closer communication; encourage partnership and avoid duplication; encourage seafarers in their spiritual journey while respecting the various faith and denominational traditions, and encourage collaboration in port welfare structures for the benefit of seafarers.

The three societies already have chaplains working alongside each other from a united seafarers' centre in Southampton and at Portbury (Bristol), Felixstowe and Milford Haven. At other UK ports two of the three societies work together.
