To the Clergy and People of the Episcopal Diocese of New York:
I have been in contact with the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and with the Rt. Rev. Richard Chartres, Bishop of London, to express our dismay at the attacks that the people of London have endured and to offer the assurance of prayers. I ask that all congregations remember the people of London in this Sunday's public prayers and that each of us remember them in our personal prayers as well.
Bishop Sisk's Letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury
Dear Rowan,
The horror of the attacks which London has suffered is all too familiar, but it is also the experience of this horror which bonds us as a people and as individuals. I write now to assure you and the people of England of my prayers and those of the people of the Diocese of New York, as you so graciously offered your prayers and indeed your presence in New York's hour of greatest need. I have asked each of our congregations to remember all of the people of London, and especially those killed and injured in this terrorist attack, in their prayers this Sunday.
I know that London is no stranger to terrorist attacks, but I also know what a devastating effect such attacks can have. The impact falls not only on those killed or injured and on their family and friends but also and pervasively on the spirit of the larger community. I pray also that the leadership and the people of England will not be swept up in the spirit of fearful revenge that seems to have engulfed so many in this country.
Our prayers are with you.
Faithfully yours,
+Mark
Bishop Sisk's Letter to Bishop Chartres of London
Dear Richard,
I write to assure you and the people of London and of my prayers and those of the people of the Diocese of New York. I have asked all of our congregations to remember the people of London, and especially those killed and injured in this terrorist attack, in their prayers this Sunday.
Sadly London is no stranger to terrorist attacks, and I know full well that the people of that great city will rally to meet the horrors of the day with courage and steadfastness. As the full impact of the attacks becomes clarified it may be that there are specific things we in New York might do to help meet your needs in this time of testing. Please do not hesitate to let us know.
Our prayers are with you.
Faithfully yours,
+Mark
