Education Sunday for the Academic Year 2002-3

As the academic year gets under way, Churches are publishing resources for Education Sunday 2003. For more than a hundred years, this special Sunday has been recognised, in England and Wales, as a national day of prayer and celebration for everyone in the world of education. Next year, Education Sunday will be 16 February.

The material, put together by an ecumenical steering group, focuses on the role of the teacher for its theme of Teaching is for Life. With the continuing awareness of the need to recruit more teachers in many parts of the country, the message is that, for Christians, teaching can be a particularly fulfilling way of following Christ's call, in which faith can be integrated into a professional role. Teachers, it claims, have the privilege to be a power for good in society and can be a life-enhancing influence.

Churches will shortly be circulating leaflets to their schools and congregations. The denominations involved are the Baptist Union, Church of England, Roman Catholic Church, Methodist Church, Salvation Army, United Reformed Church and the Church in Wales.
