The Archbishop of Canterbury has sent a message of congratulation to the British Olympic team. He wrote:
"I am writing to you all to express my deep personal admiration for the skill, courage and dedication you have shown at the Sydney Olympics. In doing so, I am sure I am also reflecting the feelings of millions of your fellow countrymen, women and children.
"To the medal winners - and there are more of you than for many years - I want to offer my warmest congratulations. You have given us great joy and we are immensely proud of you.
"But we are proud too of everyone who has taken part and given of their best - regardless of the outcome. Your dedication and determination has been no less, and we honour you for it.
"Sporting endeavour has always moved me. The single-mindedness and perseverance required are so vivid, so full of the power to inspire. And the goal is worth it! All of us can be enthused and draw strength from such examples. That includes Christians, even Archbishops, as we, too, strive for a great goal - more precious than silver and more costly than gold.
"Thank you, each one of you, for your commitment and your inspiration."
