"A Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Lord Coggan of Canterbury and Sissinghurst, the 101st Archbishop of Canterbury was held in Winchester Cathedral on 30 June 2000. The Rt Revd Michael Turnbull, Bishop of Durham, preached the sermon and the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd George Carey, read the final scripture sentences and gave the blessing.
In an opening bidding, the Bishop of Winchester, the Rt Revd Michael Scott-Joynt, said, "We have come to this Cathedral Church to worship Almighty God and to give thanks for the life of Donald Coggan, deacon, Priest, Bishop, 101st Archbishop of Canterbury, and faithful servant of Christ. We remember with gratitude his commitment to the mission of the Church, his gifts in biblical scholarship and theological education, his care as a pastor, his deep desire for Christian unity, and his lasting commitment to reconciliation between Christians and the Jewish people."
Those taking part in the service included Canon Dr Christina Baxter, principal, St John's College, Nottingham, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Portsmouth, and the Dean of Winchester, the Very Revd Michael Till. Canon John L Peterson and Mrs Deirdre Martin represented the Anglican Communion Office at the service.
The Kaddish, the Jewish memorial prayer, was led by Sir Sigmund Sternberg KCSG, patron of the International Council of Christian and Jews. The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were represented by The Lord Moore of Wolvercote.
The full cathedral congregation heard anthems by C H H Parry and Charles Wood were sung by the cathedral choir with the hymns Tell Out My Soul, Christ Triumphant, O Thou That Camest From Above, and Father, Lord of All Creation sung by all.
The Dean of Winchester led this prayer: "We thank you now for Donald Coggan, for all that was revealed of your goodness and grace in his life and ministry, and for the love he received from you and showed among us."
