The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, today (29 June 1999) hosted a private consultation on issues relating to the place of gay and lesbian people in the life of the Church of England.
Some thirty guests attended the all-day event at Lambeth Palace, reflecting on a wide variety of views and opinion within the Church.
Participants agreed that the discussions, which had no mandate to make policy, were useful and constructive.
The confidential consultation was arranged as part of the Archbishop's personal and public commitment to a deepening process of listening and dialogue.
Due to the confidential nature of this meeting, there will be no further comment from Lambeth Palace.
Notes to editors
The Archbishop hold hospitality days to discuss important issues twice a year. Previous hospitality days have covered subjects such as young people's concerns, alternative worship and concerns of Deans and Provosts. One later this year will focus on education.
