Ireland: Church does not tell people how to vote

(CT) The Anglican Primate of All Ireland, the Most Revd Dr Robin Eames, has defended his church's neutrality over the Good Friday Agreement. The Agreement, which was signed on Good Friday, sets out a political compromise between the Nationalists and Unionists in Ireland intended to bring peace to Northern Ireland. The Irish people will vote on Friday to accept or reject the proposals in the Agreement.

Dr Eames said at the opening of the church's General Synod last week:"There are those who would wish the Church of Ireland to give categorical indication of how a person should vote. I share the view that that course would be wrong."

The Synod's standing committee urged all Irish Anglicans to vote "for the common good, according to individual conscience."
