Muriel Porter, the Melbourne Anglican)A number of parishes in the former Diocese of Carpentaria have seceded from the Anglican Church following a long-running dispute over the appointment of a Torres Strait Islander Bishop.

The parishes have officially become the Church of the Torres Strait, an autonomous province of the breakaway Traditional Anglican Communion. They plan to elect their own bishop next month. The move follows protest at the appointment of the Revd Ted Mosby, parish priest of Thursday Island as assistant bishop of the Diocese of North Queensland.
