The increase in the number of people coming forward for ordination in the Church of England has caused the Church of England to need more funds for its training budget. The overspend has come because the Church believes that all who have a genuine vocation which is accepted by the Church are accepted for training.

The number of men and women coming forward for ordination has exceeded all expectations. In 1993, following years of decline, numbers of ordinations started to increase. Last year there was a sudden surge in the numbers recommended for training for full time stipendiary ministry. This year there is another increase and 441 people have been accepted for training. An extra £210,000 is needed from the church's central board of finance on top of the £6 million it already pays, to finance the increase. About 600 clergy are ordained each year in the Church of England, keeping a level of around 10,000 clergy.
