The Church is to give every household in Britain a millennium candle at the end of 1999, the Second Church Estates Commissioner said last week. The candles can be lit for a moment of silent national reflection at midnight on 31st December, as the new millennium dawns.
Another initiative, of the Open Churches Trust and the group Celebration 2000, involves a short service of prayer, open to all, in every church at noon on 1 January 2000. This will be preceded by a five-minute peal of every church bell in the land.
