The Anglican Church has been advised that there will be an state inquiry into the need for euthanasia in Tasmania.

The Anglican Media spokesperson for Tasmania, the Revd Peter Stuart, made the following comment:-

"It is not a surprise that members of State Parliament have been encouraged to consider the need for euthanasia legislation in Tasmania....

"The Anglican Church continues to applaud the select committee process used by the State Parliament which enables significant matters to receive widespread community consideration prior to Parliamentary Debate. Representatives of the Church look forward to participating in the Select Committee Inquiry when it begins. We hope that ample opportunity will be afforded to both private and institutional citizens of Tasmania to make representation on this divisive community issue."

"The Anglican Church continues to hold the view that the quality and dignity of human life is best promoted through the life affirming choice of palliative care rather than legalising assisted suicide and medical killing.

"We cannot see how legalising active euthanasia could be good for Tasmania or its citizens. The enactment of such law would place a considerable burden on elderly Tasmanians and people living with disabilities no matter what the specific details of the bill."

"We hope that the Select Committee will reject the need for euthanasia legislation and instead recommend the need for the continued enhancement of health and palliative care services in all parts of the State."
