The nursery class at St Luke's Church of England School in Wolverhampton was attacked by a man on Monday 8 July. Children in the area had been invited to attend a "teddy bears' picnic" party at the school. A man entered the school premises and attacked the children and their teacher at random. Four adults and three young children were injured. The man was caught the following night by police and is under arrest.
The local church, clergy and Bishop of Wolverhampton played an important role in helping the community. The school has recently spent about £3,000 on security, including a new alarm system and extra locks on the doors. But the local vicar, the Revd Timothy Anderson, said that the school can never be fully protected: "It would have been impossible to prevent this man from attacking the children, short of putting up ten-foot fences and barbed wire."
