Research shines light on Beothuk-Anglican relations

Two hundred years ago, a C of E missionary, the Revd John Leigh, arrived in Canada. Shortly afterwards, skirmishes between settlers and the Indigenous Beothuk people left several dead, including the local tribal chief Nonosabasut. Ten years later, the Beothuk were extinct - the victims of cultural genocide. New research is casting fresh light on the Beothuk and the role played by the Revd John Leigh.

Catholic Vespers at Henry VIII's Chapel Royal

The Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols, last night led a service of Solemn Vespers in the Chapel Royal at Hampton Court Palace in what was the first Roman Catholic act of worship for 450 years in Henry VIII’s chapel, which was the backdrop to much of the English Reformation.

Persecution of Christians on the increase

The charity Open Doors has published its annual World Watch list of the top 50 most dangerous countries to be a Christian. It is, once again, topped by North Korea. Their research shows that persecution against Christians has increased so dramatically that persecution has risen even in those countries that have dropped out of its top 50.

Applications sought for Anglican Communion's communications director post

Would-be applicants for the post of director of communications for the Anglican Communion have another 10 days to submit their applications. The closing date for the post, which was first advertised last month, is 15 January. Interviews are expected to be held in London on 4 February.

Prayers urged for Yemen peace talks

UN-led peace talks between the warring parties in Yemen get underway next week and the Archdeacon in the Gulf, the Ven Bill Schwartz, has called for prayers that the talks will lead to a “real resolution and reconciliation” resulting in a “truly inclusive” reconstruction in the country.
